Dance of the Dragon: Myofascial Qigong (for Yogis and other Athletes)
1) A workshop focusing on creating flexibility, mobility and strength, using slow flowing movements to circulate the body’s energy (qi). it is effective in unlocking stiff joints, muscles and disentangling fascial fibers, as well as reducing the amount of tension we hold, from bad postural habits and stress. This is particularly effective for people who engage in physical practices and find that they are still holding stiffness in their bodies. The movement, works deeply into the shoulders, hips and other areas that tend to get stuck,relieving pain and freeing up the movement. Qigong recognizes stiffness and immobility as energetic (qi) stagnation where emotional and physical energy has become blocked. The movements also stretch the meridians, allowing the qi from the organs to flow more freely in the body.Qigong increases somatic sensitivity, allowing us to feel deeply into our body, and it strengthens our postural integration, teaching the body to move as a unit rather than just a bunch of parts. The role of the fascia in flexibility has been recognized the last few years by by yoga and other movement teachers, but the Chinese described the role of the fascia in the oldest known medical text, The Yellow Emperor’’s Classic of Internal Medicine, more than two thousand years ago. Dance of the Dragon Qigong connects our energy to the infinite energy of the Universe, allowing us to create more energy with less effort.
2) The ideal participant for this workshop is strong and flexible. Age is not really a factor, but the work will be a bit demanding. I made the class an hour longer to provide adequate rest periods and discussion so that it doesn’t end up being 3 solid hours of movement. Someone who does vinyasa yoga will see a difference in their standing poses and understand their hips, shoulders and intercostal muscles better after working with me.
3) Participants will understand the difference between flexibility and mobility after attending and have a new relationship with their hips, shoulders and intercostal muscles.
4) This is 80% practice, some explaining and discussion.
5) Everything I teach, comes from my own experience. I am quite old and the more I practice, I still increase my mobility. I am an example of what I’m teaching.
6) There will be a short explanation of how the facia system is approached in the work and how it is related to the organ meridians. Also how the fascia is related to the emotions, especially in the places where we get stuck, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Also there will be a warmup, then three of 4 periods of practice separated by rest periods, which will be necessary because most of the practice is standing. There will be a bit of floor work as well.
7) To my knowledge, nobody else is teaching what I’m teaching. I think because my background for these methods are unique in so far as having spent more than 30 years, seriously practicing yoga, as well as qigong and martial arts, which were until the last few years, secondary.
