Womb Space - An Empowering Gentle Birth Talk with Doulas

43198547_2122399331346458_6134599280339451904_o.jpg

A two-hour talk where expecting parents and those who wish to get pregnant can learn about gentle birth and how they can be supported by a birth doula. In this event, two doulas will be sharing their experience about their job. A mother who has been supported by a doula during labor and birth will also share her experience.

As an Independent Holistic Childbirth Educator and Mentor, Maíra will be sharing how she works in regards to preparing for birth during pregnancy using movement, dance, yoga, childbirth physiology, meditation, breath awareness and birth art as tools to empower the expecting mother in her journey into motherhood. With her experience in teaching HypnoBirthing, the Mongan method, Ruzana will be sharing how the techniques taught in her course are effective as preparation for childbirth.

About the speakers:
Maíra Dias Botelho de Magalhães is a mother of four wonderful creatures whose very existence and births have totally changed her life and continue to take her into a place of endless learning. She is a Yogini with a deep knowledge of her own body with a number of years of experience in both dancing and teaching different styles of yoga. As a meditator she considers her life has been transformed (and continues to be) through this continuous practice. She is a Birth Doula with various trainings and experience in different birth settings, with a deep commitment to the mothers who are under her care. As an Independent Holistic Childbirth Educator and Mentor, her role is to empower women so that they trust their bodies fully to do the transformational emotional and physiological work of labor and birth. She is a Speaker and a Support Groups Facilitator who has developed a quality of listening and who can share with others from her heart encouraging others to do so as well. She has been volunteering with Ibu for the past two years both in the Well-Baby Clinic and Ibu Support Groups. Follow her on Instagram and her Facebook page @mairadbmdoula

Ruzana Abdul Rahman is a mother of three HypnoBirthing babies who is passionate about spreading positive birth stories. Birth was one of her biggest fears but she challenged herself when was was pregnant with her eldest to try and find a comfortable means of birthing. She honestly didn't think painless and safe natural birth was possible until she went for HypnoBirthing class. HypnoBirthing totally changed her world about birth. From believing that birth is a scary risky event, now she knows better. A mother who is loved, supported, educated and feels confident without fear can have wonderful natural births, and Ruzana hopes to spread the message of HypnoBirthing for mothers out there. She has been present at a few births as a doula and is passionate about supporting women in their journey. She believes a new era is possible, an era filled with gentle births that our babies are born into.

Dance of the Dragon: Myofascial Qigong (23rd October)

DANCE OF THE DRAGON.jpg

Dance of the Dragon: Myofascial Qigong (for Yogis and other Athletes)

  • Tuesday 23rd October

  • Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm

  • Price: RM200 (per person)

1) A workshop focusing on creating flexibility, mobility and strength, using slow flowing movements to circulate the body’s energy (qi). it is effective in unlocking stiff joints, muscles and disentangling fascial fibers, as well as reducing the amount of tension we hold, from bad postural habits and stress. This is particularly effective for people who engage in physical practices and find that they are still holding stiffness in their bodies. The movement, works deeply into the shoulders, hips and other areas that tend to get stuck, relieving pain and freeing up the movement. Qigong recognizes stiffness and immobility as energetic (qi) stagnation where emotional and physical energy has become blocked. The movements also stretch the meridians, allowing the qi from the organs to flow more freely in the body.Qigong increases somatic sensitivity, allowing us to feel deeply into our body, and it strengthens our postural integration, teaching the body to move as a unit rather than just a bunch of parts. The role of the fascia in flexibility has been recognized the last few years by by yoga and other movement teachers, but the Chinese described the role of the fascia in the oldest known medical text, The Yellow Emperor’’s Classic of Internal Medicine, more than two thousand years ago. Dance of the Dragon Qigong connects our energy to the infinite energy of the Universe, allowing us to create more energy with less effort.

2) The ideal participant for this workshop is strong and flexible. Age is not really a factor, but the work will be a bit demanding. I made the class an hour longer to provide adequate rest periods and discussion so that it doesn’t end up being 3 solid hours of movement. Someone who does vinyasa yoga will see a difference in their standing poses and understand their hips, shoulders and intercostal muscles better after working with me.

3) Participants will understand the difference between flexibility and mobility after attending and have a new relationship with their hips, shoulders and intercostal muscles.

4) This is 80% practice, some explaining and discussion.

5) Everything I teach, comes from my own experience. I am quite old and the more I practice, I still increase my mobility. I am an example of what I’m teaching.

6) There will be a short explanation of how the facia system is approached in the work and how it is related to the organ meridians. Also how the fascia is related to the emotions, especially in the places where we get stuck, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Also there will be a warmup, then three of 4 periods of practice separated by rest periods, which will be necessary because most of the practice is standing. There will be a bit of floor work as well.

7) To my knowledge, nobody else is teaching what I’m teaching. I think because my background for these methods are unique in so far as having spent more than 30 years, seriously practicing yoga, as well as qigong and martial arts, which were until the last few years, secondary.

Time: 10am - 12pm
Price: RM100

FULLY BOOKED!.jpg

NO! YOU’RE NOT MISS OUT YET! JOIN THE NEXT MYOFASCIAL QI GONG ON 22ND MONDAY & 23RD TUESDAY @ 7:30PM. SIGN UP NOW!

Dance of the Dragon Qigong:
Expanding Into Your Movement (Moving from the Center)
Time: 9am - 12pm (3h)
Price: RM150

This workshop will focus on integrating the body, mind and movement. People have become more and more disconnected from their own bodies. We have largely lost our sense of coordination and our movement has become primarily linear. Qigong teaches us that our primary energy center is based in our physical center of gravity, our lower belly or lower Dan Tien. The body is like a five pointed star, burning in the center. By learning to move from our center we begin to reintegrate our mind and body. and move more effortlessly. As our postural integration increases we become less awkward and clumsy in our movement, we become more connected to the earth that we live on. Our mind and attention becomes more focused and less distracted. Our personal energy increases and we become calmer and less exhausted in our lives.

Dance of the Dragon;
Myofascial Qigong (for Yogis and other Athletes)
Time: 2 - 6pm (4h)
Price: RM200

A workshop focusing on creating flexibility, mobility and strength, using slow flowing movements to circulate the body’s energy (qi).

The movements also stretches the meridians, allowing the qi from the organs to flow more freely in the body. For This workshop no equipment is required, only loose clothing for physical practice. It is a workshop with 80% practice but adequate rest periods and discussion will allow the Participants to understand the difference between flexibility / mobility and will see a difference in their standing poses and understand their hips and shoulders much better.

These methods are unique because all lessons come from the teacher’s own experience having spent more than 30 years, seriously practicing them.

Psoas: Storer of All Stress

31716327_1805366099521430_7197492893123084288_o.jpg

Conducted by Elizabeth Buri, certified Level II CORE Instructor

Workshops fees:
Early bird before 29th June: RM668
After 29th June: RM820

A six hour day is barely enough time to explore this complicated muscle and its relationships to other parts of the body, especially to iliacus and quadratus lumborum, but also to throat and jaw issues, plantar fasciitis, shoulder and back problems. Noah believes the psoasacts as a lightning rod to attract excess trauma and store it along the body’s deep line. Besides intensive study of anatomy, function and aberration, we’ll focus on how to work and how to elicit client work, slowly, gently and safely. Added in recent years: balance of psoas/ diaphragm/iliacus/quadratus lumborum and attention given to interaction of vagus nerve.

Free Talk: What is CORE Fascial Release?

CORE* Bodywork
* **Coax Order, Restore Energy

Many of us hold on to old fears, traumas and stresses and allow them to define and frame our lives. Based on the idea that the body is composed of twenty-one important hinges, CORE Bodywork shows how we can 'oil' and free these hinges, stretching the body out so we can feel healthy and happy more of the time. The therapeutic work is influenced by the Karrasch's background in Rolfing, a hands-on manipulation of the body's connective tissue designed to enhance posture and freedom of movement. CORE Bodywork offers people with both ordinary and extraordinary body challenges new ideas for how they can make changes in the way their bodies work for them. CORE Bodywork challenges us all to get in touch with and listen to our bodies to improve our health and overall happiness.

About Elizabeth Buri

Currently one of the 2 only certified Level II CORE Bodywork Instructors in the world, Elizabeth was invited to co author with Noah Karrash and Robert White on the book BodyMindCORE Work for the Movement Therapist: Leading Clients to CORE Breath and Awareness, published May 2017.

Elizabeth’s path into health and wellbeing began as a fitness trainer in 2003. Soon after, she became a certified Practitioner of Pilates Studio under Polestar Pilates.Throughout the year of 2010, Elizabeth studied and became certified in both Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis. With 15 years as a yoga student, she finally was certified as an Integrated Yoga teacher in 2014, which combines the fluidity of the Scarevelli Yoga method, Hatha and Yin Yoga.

A one year stint in London gave Elizabeth the chance to study sports massage therapy in 2013 with the North London School of Sports Massage (NLSSM). There, she discovered a special bodyworker named Noah Karrasch who changed the course of her life. Currently a certified CORE Level 4 Bodyworker, the only one in the Asian Region at the moment… with hopes to bring Mr Karrasch and his CORE Bodywork to Asia.

Intertwining all this knowledge and love for body movement and bodyworks, Elizabeth LOVES to play and create full body program, working with a variety of body misalignment and discomforts in a holistic way, seeking balance physically, mentally and emotionally.

Airo Yoga Workshop

31506829_237852083440734_7182244943178498048_n.jpg

Let's Swing with Airo Yoga!

We are hosting the same workshops on two different dates in May!

Airo Yoga is a playful and authentic approach to the traditional teachings of yoga built upon aerial yoga techniques and our signature Airo 'swing'. Designed for the modern-day yogi, Airo combines the elements of yoga, Pilates, inversions, and acrobatic play as a path towards bodhi. Our mission is good vibes and badass empowerment for all.

When you become a part of our Airo squad, you’ll encounter play as a path to consciousness, feel intense highs as you flip to new upside-down lows, and experience your own body on a whole new level (literally).

The three-hour Airo Yoga Workshops, developed by Airo’s creators’ own sweat and tears (thankfully no blood), will familiarise students with our lively and spirited swing and highlight the concept of mindfulness through play.

Open to all levels, Airo Yoga is perfect for both yogis and non-yogis, fitness fanatics to gym dabblers, ravers to ecstatic dancers, and even vegans to (gasp) meat eaters (I LOVE THIS - MORE) . Curiosity is the first step to exploration. Join us and let’s swing!

Workshop Breakdown:
• Intro to the Airo Swing
• Meditation
• Spirited Flow
• Inversion Play
• Partner Work

9th June 2018 (Saturday), 2 - 5pm

THE FACILITATORS

AJANTA
Diagnosed with a crippling and “incurable” illness in 2012, Ajanta left her corporate career as a lawyer and embarked on a search for an alternative method of healing. Her journey led her to Asia and deep into yoga, meditation, Energy & Shamanic Work, transpersonal psychotherapy, Taoist practices, and Tantra. She has studied and practiced with teachers from all over the world.

As she cleared years of supressed emotion and trauma, shed layers of oppressive conditioning and limiting beliefs, and re-discovered her authentic feminine nature, she experienced (and continues to experience) deep healing, not just of her physical body, but on every level of her being.

Now a qualified therapeutic yoga teacher, EFT practitioner, Laughter Yoga Leader, and devoted Tantrika, Ajanta’s passion is to inspire and support others to embrace their potential to live a healthy and fully expressive life.

She currently splits her time between Europe and Asia, coaching, facilitating workshops, and continuing her studies in Energy Psychology and the Shamanic, Tantric and Priestess Arts.

Having experienced for herself time and again the transformational power of women coming together in circle, Ajanta wants to spread the Sisterhood magic worldwide, creating spaces and facilitating experiences where women can support each other in exploring the fullness of their femininity, re-discovering their bodies’ infinite wisdom, and re-connecting with the red, raw power of the wild woman within.

------------

HANNAH LO
Hannah is a speaker, singer, workshop facilitator and guide for women who want to transform their relationship to their body, emotions, femininity and sexuality.

After almost a decade of immersing herself in all shades of spiritual exploration, Hannah found what she was looking for in the realm of the feminine mysteries. It was this path that finally taught her how to love, embrace and trust herself. A journey she now leads many other women through.

Hannah has to this date facilitated over 50 workshops, classes and talks. Her work is an embodiment, experiential focused approach to help women remember their inherent connection to themselves, their intuition and their wild free spirits.

HEADSTAND (SIRSASANA) WORKSHOP

HEADSTAND (SIRSASANA) WORKSHOP WITH DANICA (5th May).jpg

Headstand (Sirsasana) Workshop
(BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND)

RM80 (per person)
Saturday, May 5th 2018, 1:30 - 3:30pm
Instructor: Danica Al Kharfan

Do you practice yoga but don’t feel comfortable going into a headstand during the class yet? Or are you practicing the headstand but finding it difficult to get away from the wall? Or you wish to learn a tripod headstand? Then this workshop is for you!

Headstand (Sirsasana) is named “King of Asanas” and when practiced regularly it has many physiological and psychological health benefits.

In a vinyasa class it is hard to learn the posture as it requires proper alignement, muscle engagement and core activation.

So in this 2 hours workshop you will learn:-

- a step by step approach to learn or master this pose
- guidence and instructions to practice safely
- variations and different ways of support
- ideas and tools to incorporate headstand or its variations into your practice

This workshop will include a preparatory flow practice which will warm us up to strengthen the upper body, shoulders and core.

This will be followed by various exercises using the wall, props and partners. No previous headstand experience necessary but some basic yoga experience needed; headstand beginners are offered skill-building tools & advanced students are provided with opportunities to refine alignment or learn other variations of headstand.

But everyone will have the opportunity to go upside down and do it so in a safe and supported way!

Please note: You don’t need to be able to do full headstand to attend, as all options, instructions and support with be given. This workshop is not for those who have any neck injury, have a high blood pressure or heart condition.

For any questions please email Danica at danicaalkharfanyoga@gmail.com or 019-335 1574

Freeing Emotions and Energy Through Myofascial Release

Based on Noah’s book of the same name, this course examines Noah’stheory that most of us get blocked in one of four main body segmentshead, heart, gut or groin… and seeks to explore how and why we’ve gotten blocked and how words and touch can challenge a client to examine and let go of such blockages. We’ll spend time with the model, working to create length and space between the four segments, then turn to emotional anatomy… how the way we feel controls the way we feel. Certain diseases, symptoms, postures and patterns can correspond to specific emotion/reaction to situations. An emotional situation over a long period of time leads to a posture that supports that emotional pattern. The focus of this class is to validate this idea so we as bodyworkers can facilitate the release of these emotions trapped in the bodymindcore mechanism. Without pretending to be psychologists, we can often recognize a specific emotion-related holding pattern and encourage the identification and release of it. This is not necessarily a time when we will release emotions; it is more a time to discuss how and when it may be appropriate to facilitate a client's emotional release. Note: Cost of book is included in this course.

Our Yoga Beginner 5-week Series is perfect for absolute beginners and anyone looking to strengthen the foundation of their existing yoga practice and is especially designed especially for this target group of students.   We will meet each Sunday in April to learn about the fundamentals of yoga. Building your familiarity, understanding, strength and ease steadily over the 5 classes so that you will feel comfortable to join a regular class afterwards. The 5-week series will systematically introduce the principles of alignment and breathing, as well as the practice of basic stretches, balancing and strengthening poses, and relaxation techniques.  Each week will build consecutively on what is covered in the previous class. The class size will be limited. You might want to consider joining our April Beginner Class Series at OurBodySpace if you have: - Never done yoga - Attended a couple of regular yoga classes but would like to slow down and learn the basics from scratch properly - Attended any of our beginners workshop and then didn't keep coming - Just started yoga and are enjoying it but still often feel lost in the regular classes - Not done yoga for years and need a refresher to help you get going again Here’s an outline of what the April 2018 series will cover…………………. WEEK 1:  We start with a short relaxation and deep breathing to centre ourselves for the practice. This first week you will learn how a yoga practice helps the mind, body and breath work together in unison.  We will introduce and practice alternate nostril breathing and explain the benefits. The different props often used in yoga class will be introduced and you’ll be shown common uses for them. After gently warming-up the whole body we will introduce and practice the Sun Salutation sequence and some basic seated and standing poses (standing forward bend, chair pose). The class will finish with a relaxing guided relaxation pose. After the class there will be time for group and individual questions. WEEK 2:  We will start with a short relaxation and deep breathing to centre ourselves for the practice. The importance of the breath continues to be emphasized in Week 2. You will be introduced to more standing poses. When the body is nice and warmed up we will include some warrior poses into our Sun Salutations (Warrior I and Warrior II). We will introduce and practice a basic balancing pose – tree pose. We will continue to stay focused on the breath, learn about and practice the correct alignment for each pose (using the props if that helps) and learn something about the benefits of the different poses. The class will finish with a relaxing guided relaxation pose. After the class there will be time for group and individual questions. WEEK 3: We will start with a short relaxation and deep breathing to centre ourselves. We will learn how to use the breath to help expand and clear out our lungs through a cleansing practice (kriya) called shining skull breath. We will warm up with some nice stretching and continue practicing our sun salutation sequence. This week we will introduce and practice some poses that help to strengthen the back and improve flexibility in the spine. We will use cat/cow to warm the spine and try a balance from all fours. We will include a heart opening sequence (to open the chest and also for strengthening the spine). This week we will also add some twisting postures (standing, sitting and reclined twists). You’ll go more deeply into breathing technique while in the twist poses. The class will finish with a relaxing guided relaxation pose. After the class there will be time for group and individual questions and perhaps a chance to chat about how you can take your yoga ‘off the mat’ and use in everyday life.    WEEK 4: We will start with a short relaxation and deep breathing to centre ourselves for the practice. We will warm up and practice our kriya – shining skull breath - and practice alternate nostril breathing. Then we will move into a series of our Sun Salutations – focusing on the idea of breath to movement and starting to discover a real sense of flow and ease in the sequence. We will practice some seated forward bends followed by the heart opening poses from week three. We will introduce inversions (with lots of modifications to suit each students’ comfort level). The class will finish with a relaxing guided relaxation pose and after the relaxation we will practice a short guided meditation. After the class there will be time for group and individual questions. WEEK 5: In this final week of the series, you will apply many of the things you’ve learned in the previous weeks. You will now be familiar with all the basic building blocks of a yoga class and we will work through a full class starting with our breath/energy flows, sun salutations, forward and back bends, twists and balance poses and an inversion. You will be able to experience what it feels like to practice moving through the yoga asana (poses) with steadiness and ease. The class will finish with a relaxing guided relaxation pose and after the relaxation and time for group or individual questions. We will also talk about the different yoga class styles/classes and which might suit you best. There are no barriers to entry for yoga . AN INTRODUCTION TO YOGA FOR BEGINNERS

WORKSHOP FOR BEGINNERS.jpg

A yoga beginner's workshop from 12.00 to 14.30. We will look at some basic ‘guidelines’ for a safe yoga practice and discuss in brief the foundations of yoga (the philosophy) and some of the different schools/styles (Ashtanga, hatha, Iyengar, Kundalini) – which can be confusing to a beginner! We will introduce and practice a cleansing practice or ‘kriya’ (kapala bhati) and a breath/energy balancing practice or ‘pranayam’ (anuloma viloma) and explain the benefits. We will learn/practice some core poses/postures and introduce the sun salutation flow (suriya namaskar).

At the end of the workshop students will be aware of and comfortable to practice some basic breathing and poses that set the foundation for those just starting out on their yoga practice and will start to understand the benefits of a regular yoga practice.
The pace will be quite slow with time for Q&A throughout the session. The atmosphere will be informal - and we hope very friendly. We really want this to be another opportunity for those considering starting a yoga practice to gain some confidence (to come to classes) and for those who already started but have lots of questions. – a chance deepen your understanding of what yoga is all about. Helen will facilitate the 17th March workshop, and will do her best to answer any questions you might have and help de-mystify the wonderful world of yoga! We really hope you can join us!
